April 7, 2011 Dear Adelphi Student:
At its March 28, 2011 meeting, the University’s Board of Trustees established Adelphi’s 2011–2012 tuition and fee rates. We want to share this important news early.
Adelphi, like other institutions and individuals in our region, faces escalating expenses. As such, we have taken, and will continue to take, deliberate measures to reduce costs without sacrificing quality, to find efficiencies, and expand our use of alternative energy in the face of rising oil prices. Based on these efforts, our Trustees approved a plan to keep our tuition increase to the lowest level in 14 years, while at the same time, reaffirming our commitment to continued program improvements, financial aid, and scholarships. The tuition increases will be held to 2 percent for undergraduates, and approximately 2.7 percent for graduate students.
This decision was driven by the University’s recognition of the financial circumstances faced by our students and families. The economic climate and realities of our region weighed heavily on the Board’s decision. As it stands, this increase will allow Adelphi to retain its position as the leading private University in the region, recognized for our world class and highly relevant programs, while ensuring that students have the ability to pursue their academic goals without the pressing burden of major tuition increases.
While we have not seen the increases proposed by other regional institutions, we are confident that our increases will be among the lowest in the nation, as evidenced by a recent story in the Washington Post that indicated that “tuition is rising about 4.5 percent a year in the higher education industry as a whole.”
You have our pledge that we will continue to take all possible measures to ensure investments in areas critical to our continued progress and your success while maintaining an affordable tuition. For these efforts, Adelphi has been recognized by the Fiske Guide to Colleges as “Best Buy” for five consecutive years. We are proud of this designation and we hope you are as well.
We understand that you may have questions about tuition or new financial needs to bring to our attention. The Office of Student Financial Services is committed to assisting you and is available to answer any questions you may have.
